Adorable dwarf shrub bearing orange-red blooms in July and August then tiny, edible pomegranates. Where not hardy makes good container plant and bonsai.

Care: sun to part shade in moist well-drained to well-drained soil
Native: Europe to Himalayas
“The plants will bear miniature fruit if grown in areas with year-round temperatures rarely fall below 40° F. To grow indoors, moderate night-time temperatures should be given (50° to 60° F). Keep at 40° to 45° F in winter until new growth appears. In the growing period, keep moderately moist. Water sparingly from August on. This plant requires good drainage. Plants will bear fruit indoors if grown in a sunny exposure.” Missouri Botanic Garden. This dwarf described in 1803.

Short hedge-hog like clump with white flowers turning to bronzy spiked seedheads May-June. Best for rock, railroad or fairy gardens – anyplace for a miniature, clumping grass.

Campanula is Latin meaning little bell. Punctata means spotted. In 1629 Parkinson described campanulas as “cherished for the beautie of their flowers.” This variety collected in Japan before 1950.

Hosta was named for Dr. Nicholas Host (1761 – 1834) physician to the emperor of Austria and expert on grasses. H. plantaginea was a popular Chinese plant as long ago as the Han Dynasty (202 B.C. – 220 A.D.) Chinese used an ointment made from H. plantaginea to reduce inflammation and fever. M. de Guines introduced H. plantaginea to Europe when he sent it to the king of France in 1789. Gertrude Jekyll, (1848-1931) mother of the mixed perennial border, recommended H. plantaginea ‘Grandiflora’ to keep border gardens looking “full and beautiful.”
