2008 Catalog
Heritage Flower Farm is a boutique nursery devoted to growing heirloom plants and educating gardeners about them - their stories in history and how to cultivate them. That's why this catalog includes as much legend, lore and biography as plant description. We grow old fashioned plants in the old fashioned way - in the ground in rows, digging and potting up in the spring and summer as needed.
HONORS & RECOGNITION. Milwaukee Magazine honored Heritage Flower Farm with its "Best of Milwaukee" Award. We received the Wisconsin Historical Society's award for landscape preservation. Restoring American Gardens, An Encyclopedia of Heirloom Ornamental Plants (1640-1940), published by Timber Press, lists Heritage Flower Farm as an heirloom specialist and source for heirloom plants. In Search of Great Plants, the Insider's Guide to the Best Plants in the Midwest, recently published by Cool Springs Press, profiles Heritage Flower Farm and our plants.
READ THIS INFORMATION CAREFULLY
KIND OF PLANTS - The catalog divides plants into the following categories:
- Herbaceous plants - Perennials and Biennials
- Vines
- Woody ornamentals - shrubs, subshrubs & trees
- Grasses, Sedges & Rushes
BOTANICAL NAMES - Our plants are listed alphabetically, first by botanical name and then by common name, if any. We use botanical names because they accurately identify the plant. The common name "Sunflower" means many different plants. Come on, how hard can it be? The Romans could do this 2000 years ago.
MEDICINAL USES - This catalog gives you some old medicinal uses because they are part of the plant's story. Heritage Flower Farm is NOT endorsing, suggesting or telling you those uses work or are safe.
CATALOG AVAILABILITY - This catalog is on line on our website www.heritageflowerfarm.com for free. We do not have a print catalog.
BIOGRAPHIES - The catalog refers to some people, places and gardens. The history of plants is the history of people, cultures and epochs. Meager biographies of some horticultural legends are found here.
METHOD OF PAYMENT - We have many plants available online - click on a category and shop for the plant you are interested in. If you do not see a specific species online please call us at 262.662.0804, we have many plants that are not shown here or can tell you where to find a particular species if we do not have it. You may place an order through snail mail by printing out the order form shown at the bottom of the products pages and sending a check or money order enclosed with your order.
SHIPPING - Yes, you are right, it's pricey, but it is not a profit center. We try to charge what it costs. We would prefer you visit Heritage Flower Farm, see our gardens and fields of bloom and pick your own plants. But it is a long trip from Virginia to Wisconsin. If you change your mind see directions and a map by clicking here.
